This humorous collection brings attention to the every day struggles and obstacles faced by persons with disabilities while transforming the political incorrectness of the word "crip" into a message of disability activism through which we reclaim our bodies and our lives.
Criptionary Disability Humor Satire Maria R Palacios 9780972648318 Books
As an author working on books that explore the full life of a gay paraplegic, Maria Palacios' whimsical dictionary of "crip" terminology provides an uplifting take on an often hateful term. As gay activists and scholars have reclaimed the derogatory term "queer" to become an empowering word, Palacios' 'Criptionary' offers a profusion of new words that will baffle, amuse and possibly startle able-bodied readers like myself. I often caught myself stifling giggles while reading the Kindle edition on my phone. But after sharing a few pages with wheelchair-using friends, they assured me that I was right. Humor is just one more way to combat ignorance and discrimination. Don't be a 'crip-hole.' Cook up some 'cripjoles' and enjoy this latest edition of the 'criplegacy.'Product details

Criptionary Disability Humor Satire Maria R Palacios 9780972648318 Books Reviews
Working with Maria at Houston Center For Independent Living has given me the opportunity to know this amazing woman! As an outspoken advocate for disability rights, in her book, she re-claims and invents terms that the able-bodied/non-disabled persons would never dare touch. Her creativity and frankness are a powerful combination!
Maria has touched on so many aspects of life including the myths people have about people with disabilities. In spite of it all, she has found a way to make it entertaining and educational without offending anyone. It is an eye-opener and I would recommend Criptionary to anyone who understands that there are many perspectives from which to view life and that open-mindedness is a valuable key to our existence.
Not sure what cripativity is? You will after reading the newest offering from Maria Palacios (author of "The Female King" and "Karate on Wheels"), which builds on Palacios' reputation as a sharp, unabashedly personal writer. The author's wit and life experience shines through each selection; the vulnerability behind much of the humor is unmistakable, such as in the entries for "cripanholic" and "cripanonymous." This may be the author's most provocative work to date -- don't miss out!
This book is a quick, fun read that highlights the experience of disability in a thoughtful way and challenges the reader to rethink disability.
Funny book.
Have you ever met a person with a disability, and wondered how to overcome the awkward feelings you are hiding? This book gives such insight into terms we all use daily, but that might be more significant to a "Crip" (person with a disability). Maria R. Palacios has opened that world up for us to peek in, have a laugh with, and learn to be ourselves with the disabled. They expect no more from us. If only we all would be that way.....
This is a must read book. A review does not provide much because each word or concept has its own definition, interpretation, and perception.
